This is the second year we have had a secret santa in the Junior High and High School music department at Chapel Hill. The rules are simple; you draw a name of one of your classmates out of a bucket, and you get them a $2 or less present. The idea is to go to the dollar tree and pick the single best item you can find. It’s always a lot of fun and the students can express their creativity through their choices. It feels good for the holidays and makes us feel more like a team. But it’s more than that. In a choir of 40-50 students it would be easy to be lost in the crowd or to not know everyone. But our largest choir or orchestra at Chapel Hill is 18. Everyone should know everyone, but they don’t. So here was an opportunity to have everyone’s name said out loud, everyone got a present, and everyone got to give a present. Like any team, choirs and orchestras work best when we know, trust, and depend on each other. Also, presents are cool. Merry Christmas everyone!
